Water Purification System consists of the following 3 stages:

Stage I: Sediment Filtering Stage – to remove particles visible to the naked eye.

Stage II: Purification Stage – using an added chemical to disinfect the water as it flows through the system.

Stage III: Polishing Stage – to remove any taste or odor and leave enough purification chemical to keep the now potable water, from being re-contaminated.

I have a 4 stage R/O unit for my salt water reef tank. It does a great job.

Now another way but, Please do not try this at home…

But when I was in the military we used plain old clorox. The same as you use for your laundry. There is a specific concentration for doing this and again please do not try this on your own.

So this clearly states that there are different processes and each has different stages to go through. Clorox being one stage.

There are also Iodine tablets that you can buy at camping supply stores
