It is VERY beneficial both in fresh water and salt water aquariums, do you need it? No.
The general idea of it is making hard water soft, and very soft water manageable to sustain a reasonable pH, gH, kH, etc.
Whether or not you need an RO/DI filter for your saltwater aquarium will depend on the species you are keeping, and the quality of your local tap water.
You use an RO/DI filter to remove impurities from your TAP water, not your aquarium.
Depends on the quality of your tap water. You use a R/O filter to prepare your tap water before you add it to the tank.
If your tap water is clean, soft and low nitrate, then you can pretty much just add the marine salt mix and have something very close to sea water.
But if your tap water is a bit suspect, hard and full of random dissolved crud, then using a R/O filter to clean it up first is a good idea for sure.
